There are many explanations of the origin of the word “jeep
30th June 2009
Jeep: A four-wheel drive vehicle of one-half- to one-and-one-half-ton capacity for reconnaissance or other army duty. A term applied to the bantam-cars, and occasionally to other motor vehicles (U.S.A.) in the Air Corps, the Link Trainer; in the armored forces, the ½-ton command vehicle. Also referred to as “any small plane, helicopter, or gadget.”
The original vehicle which first appeared as the prototype Bantam BRC became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the US Army and allies during the World War II and postwar period. Many vehicles serving similar military and civilian roles have since been created by many nations. Jeeps were also used by the U.S. Postal Service in the 20th century for mail services.
The XJ Cherokee introduced in 1984 was the first jeep

A few clay models were based on the existing SJ Cherokee. Early sketches of the XJ Cherokee had an European influence, and most of the styling cues were done by AMC engineers. The ongoing debate suggests that Renault sketch artists were involved right after the 1979 partnership with AMC.Noticing that General Motors was developing a new two-door S-10 based Blazer, AMC decided to design an entirely new four-door model, but worried about rollovers Gerald C. Meyers hired one of Ford’s best engineers, Roy Lunn to design what is known as the Quadra-Link suspension.[3] François Castaing developed the drivetrain using a much smaller engine than normally found in 4WD vehicles and reduced the weight of the new model.
Its innovative appearance and sales popularity spawned important imitators as other automakers began to notice that this model began replacing regular cars.[1] It was built in Toledo, Ohio in the United States and in Beijing, China. The XJ platform provided the mechanical basis for the MJ-series Jeep Comanche pick-up.
The XJ was selected by Robert Cumberford of Automobile Magazine as one of the 20 greatest cars of all time, calling it “possibly the best SUV shape of all time, it is the paradigmatic model to which other designers have since aspired.”
Three trim levels were offered for the Jeep Liberty
26th June 2009
The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines, the 150 hp 2.4 L I4, dropped in 2006, and the 210 hp 3.7 L V6. A VM Motori 2.8 L I4 common rail turbodiesel became available in CRD branded 2005–2006 Sport and Limited models. The diesel utilized a variable geometry turbocharger and generated 160 horsepower (120 kW) and 295 pound-feet of torque. The overbuilt nature of the diesel powerplant added nearly 200 pounds to the CRD’s curb weight versus the gasoline model. DaimlerChrysler introduced the CRD to gauge the marketability of diesel engines in North America; diesels are already common in Europe. Jeep exceeded their expectations by selling 10,000 Liberty CRD models in the first calendar year of sales.
It was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs up until the “car based” 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. The Jeep Liberty features a unibody-on-ladder-frame construction, which imparts additional stiffness and off road capabilities. It is assembled Ohio in the United States, Egypt and Venezuela. 70 percent of Liberty buyers are new to the Jeep marque.[citation needed]
Dodge Nitro, which is built on the same platform , while the Nitro is not offered with low-range gearing. The 2008 Liberty debuted at the 2007 New York International Auto Show.
The Liberty has dropped its four-cylinder option because of the Patriot and Compass crossover SUVs taking its place as Jeep’s four-cylinder vehicles. The iron-block, aluminum-head V6 is the only engine for 2008. Towing capacity is 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). For now, there is no diesel model for the U.S. Jeep stopped building the Liberty CRD for the American market because it could not meet tougher 2007 emissions standards. Transmission choices are both carry-overs: a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Standard equipment includes electronic stability control with roll mitigation, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist. New Features include standard side airbags.
All are available with either 2WD or 4WD. In 2007, the Renegade trim level was replaced with the Latitude that appears to focus on a more urban appearance.
